How AP Potential Works

Score Correlations

AP Potential uses a research-based approach to identify students who are ready for AP. The tool analyzes the relationship, called a correlation, between a student’s SAT Suite scores and their likelihood of success on a specific AP Exam.

What is a score correlation? A correlation measures the strength and direction of the relationship between two variables. In AP Potential, it shows how well SAT Suite performance predicts AP Exam performance. Here’s a quick guide:

Correlation ValueWhat It Means
~0.1Small relationship
~0.3Moderate relationship
0.5 or higherStrong relationship

All correlations in AP Potential are positive—meaning higher SAT Suite scores are associated with stronger AP performance. This makes AP Potential a reliable, data-driven way to identify student readiness.

Score Correlation Table

The table below shows which section(s) of the SAT Suite of Assessments were used to predict performance, and the correlation between SAT Suite performance and AP performance for each AP Exam.
